Prohibition
Prohibition had been introduced on the state level in the northern states in the 1850's, the national prohibition emerged. The temperance movement led to adoption of prohibition laws by 13 states before the Civil War. The League wasn't focused only on the elimination of drinking which was not made illegal but on the abolition of the sale of alcohol. They focused to influence both the state and federal levels. Backed by the Protestant churches, that helped to build enough strength. The goal was to have the ability to defend their territory against alcohol imports. Prohibition amendment passed Congress and was sent to the states for ratification late in 1917. Attempting to make other countries abandon alcohol, the prohibitionists wished to protect the US against illegal imports of liquor, the U.S had a dry country which was not selling any alcohol at the time other than the medicines being prescribed by any doctor. While some towns did go "dry", others did their best to make their own. Drinking reduced the efficiency of factory and agricultural workers. Encouraging the drinkers to help others out to resist temptation. Congress had passed this amendment because they thought that the consumption of alcohol brought down the moral standards of America. Even though it was illegal to buy or sell alcohol, the consumption of alcohol wasn't. Another solution to get alcohol was to make it at home and illegally distributing it with speakeasies and another types of people.
